Town information
Previously, San Lorenzo was called San Miguel de Hato Grande and it was only a village made up of a large territory mostly dedicated to livestock.
This territory was part of the town of Caguas and, although historians do not agree on its founding date, several documents confirm that in 1811, San Miguel de Hato Grande became an independent municipality.
The subdivisions of the valley were called ranches because they were dedicated to livestock. San Miguel de Hato Grande, the original village, developed around a hermitage built in 1737 on one of the ranches. The construction of the hermitage ordered by Miguel Muñoz de Oneca, owner of the herd through his marriage to one of the heiresses of the Delgado family. Both the hermitage and the village around it were named in honor of the patron saint of Miguel Muñoz Oneca. According to legend, around 1812 the martyr San Lorenzo appeared on a rock above the Cayrabón River that borders the town.
